Five School Lessons Which Would’ve Helped With Blogging

Blogging might seem like a walk in the park to most people – it’s just tapping on a keyboard right? If only it was that easy! There are a fair few skills I’ve had to learn over the last seven years and unfortunately, I’ve had to learn the hard way with some of them. Hello nine months of my entire blog being in Times New Roman because I messed up something in the HTML. My baaaaad! But you live and you learn (and manage to tweak the code eventually).

Things would’ve been a whole lot easier if we had lessons on blogging before things got tough. Can you imagine that? Double maths, physics then SEO and image optimisation… Would’ve been handy! I’ve sort of been thinking up these random lecture ideas in my head so I thought it would be fun to talk about school lessons which would’ve helped with blogging!

Cameras/Photography

If you took photography or art, you’ll probably know this one but I didn’t. I spent hours and I mean houuuuuurs researching aperture, f-stops, ISO and ‘how to get a blurry background’ and even now, I have to stick the odd question into Google because mate, cameras are confusing. If I’d learnt about cameras and photography in school then I would’ve saved myself so much time. Also, it’s just one of those fields I want to be an expert in and know straightaway that because the lighting is dark but there are bright lights everywhere that I need to do this, this and this for the perfect shot. Know what I mean?

Lightroom

Lightroom genuinely terrifies me. It’s all the bars and colours and just everything. I WISH I’d learnt how to use Lightroom in school because my editing would be 100 times better. I can use most Creative Cloud programs but not Lightroom and that is definitely something I wanna tackle this year!

SEO

Schools these days might teach SEO in IT but back in my day (I say that like I’m ancient, I’m only 23) we learnt nothing. I’m pleased to say I taught everything I know about SEO myself and it’s done me well on my blog and in my career (although transferring domains fucked it) but a few lessons at school would’ve helped me so much, especially as I started blogging whilst I was at school.

Invoicing

When I first sent an invoice to a brand I was completely lost. What’s an invoice number? What are payment terms? What should I do about VAT? It took me bloody ages to firstly work out what everything was and secondly, design it in my branding. Thank God for Google eh?

Chasing payments

Payments, not pavements. Although, I do love that song.

I think I speak on behalf on most bloggers when I say it would be fab to know exactly how to get the money you’re owed within the payment terms. Too many of us have waited days, weeks and months for our invoice to be cleared and it’s not really good enough, especially when some bloggers need that money to live off. I’ve actually just spent most of my morning chasing an overdue payment and I can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it is!

My school offered photography classes, and I signed up for the class, but I didn’t end up getting it on my schedule. I did learn a tiny bit in my multimedia class, but it was all basic stuff that I already knew. I also took a graphic design class, but that one was extremely basic as well… and our teacher failed to ever make lesson plans. 4 out of 5 days per week were “free days”, and I’m hardly exaggerating! That class would have been so helpful for my blog. I ended up having to teach myself how to code because, because I wanted to make my own theme for my blog… and they didn’t teach us a single thing about code in school.

I would have loved to have classes on SEO, marketing, and anything related to blogging. As well as a class on video editing, and going more into depth with editing photos and creating digital art. I think more writing-focused classes would have been helpful too.

Oh no, that’s such a shame! I did graphics for A-level and it definitely helped me with learning how to use Photoshop but I could’ve done with learning a bit about coding too. Video editing classes would’ve definitely been helpful too! x

I think school’s should have so many practical skills over things like pythagorus! I don’t know why money wasn’t taught more at school like budging, taxes etc. Thankfully my brother is an accountant so helped me massively when it came to sending my first invoice otherwise I wouldn’t have had a clue. It goes over my head haha. Great blog post and I love your blog xx
