Blogging Expectations vs Reality

When I started blogging, I had absolutely no idea that I’d still be doing it six years down the line. Back then, there weren’t really any expectations to meet as barely anyone knew anything about it but fast forward to 2018 and people certainly paint a picture in their heads of what they imagine blogging is like. I’m here to shatter those preconceptions so let’s play a game of blogging expectations vs reality…

Blogging Expectations vs Reality

Taking photos

Expectation: You’ve got a semi-pro photographer/Instagram husband, the weather is perfect, your outfit looks fab and you’re photogenic af.. This will be a doddle!

Reality: You’ve got a wonky tripod, the wind has blown your hair across your face and you can’t actually get a shot with both your eyes open to save your life, even though you’re already 340 photos in.

Expectation: They said they’d send you a range of full-sized products so you can try them out properly and there’s no obligation to dedicate a whole blog post to your goodies.

Reality: Three teeny-weeny samples which you could just about use once in exchange for four Instagram posts, two blog posts, a video and your left leg.

Blogging Expectations vs Reality

Expectation: Writing blog posts is a piece of piss and only takes half an hour or so, it’s just typing words isn’t it?

Reality: Spending four hours trying to write the first paragraph of a post you were supposed to publish three weeks ago, stressing because your vocabulary has suddenly shrunk to around 100 words and isn’t coming up with anything jazzy enough for your liking. And then you finish your post, the internet cuts out and you lose it – which is exactly what happened the first time I wrote this!

“Exciting emails”

Expectation: An email from Olivia at an established PR agency who would like you to collaborate with them on a sponsored post, she explains everything in clear detail and always gets back to you.

Reality: An email from Tony in Hong Kong who wants to pay $10 a year for a banner on your blog despite you currently have zero advertising space anywhere on your entire site. Alternatively, it’s an email from a dodgy Gmail account wanting to send you one of their own posts for you to publish with do-follow links stating it’s not sponsored which are my personal favourites.

Blogging Expectations vs Reality

Expectation: Payment is a walk in the park, on-time with no problems at all and you get a lovely little email along with it, thanking you for your time and effort.

Reality: It’s two months after you sent an invoice, you still haven’t been paid and now you can’t get through to their accounts team.. Funny that!

Expectation: You’ve completely got your shit together according to your Instagram posts and spend your days sipping lattes at various aesthetic coffee shops and cafes.

Reality: Your house is a mess, you’ve got a million things to do and very little money to buy that Costa coffee you need for the gram.

Blogging Expectations vs Reality

Blogging gals

Expectation: You’re always heading off for coffee and photoshoots with your blogger gals and they’re always there to hit you up with PR contacts.

Reality: You spend most of your time alone and never quite muster up the courage to message another blogger asking them if they wanna be pals.

Obviously I’m just taking the mickey but seriously, blogging isn’t always what it cracks up to be and even though I wish everything was perfect and simple, it’s really not!

Do you have any great blogging expectations vs reality moments to share?

Haha this post made me laugh and cry at how accurate it is! Especially the part where you get an email about some random bloke who wants to send you £10. I remember a few years ago when we used to have shitty themes and low quality pictures on our blog. Oh how times have changed, haha! xx

  4. 30/05/2018 / 21:24

of course!! XDDDD the mail part I can relate so well even though most of the time is even worse. I never understand if they are serious or not , or if they read your replies because to me it doesen’t seem so. Has it ever happened to you?
Saying ‘no thank you, I don’t accept sponsored post for that price’ and they reply ‘so it is okay for you to publish for tomorrow the post? we can pay you 8$’ ?? To me, it happens so often!!

This was so good, and it was bloody hilarious- I loved it! I basically relate to a painful degree about the taking photos part as well, I think that’s why I was laughing so much while I was reading it! haha
